A spiritual gift is a special ability given at conversion for building up the body of Christ. Each member of the body of Christ has been given a tool to use in building the church.
Through the distribution and networking of spiritual gifts, God has created a system ensuring that (1) every believer has a significant role in the body of Christ, and (2) believers work together to accomplish His overall purpose. We see in Romans 12:1-8 that God has gifted each of us for ministry, and that these gifts come in many different forms. Spiritual gifts tend to fall into distinct categories based on their purpose.
